More about “Feeding the Needy”
Feeding The Needy is a program of the Covington Rotary Club designed to help feed needy families over the Christmas Holidays. Originally started by a local church in the late nineties, two members of the Covington Rotary Club resurrected the program in 2002 to ensure that children in the community had food the see them through the school holidays.
On Christmas Day, hundreds of volunteers from the Covington area deliver packages of Christmas dinenrs with all of the trimmings to families that have requested the service. The names are collected from community organizations and churches, and for two days prior to Christmas, Covington Rotary Club members and other volunteers gather to prepare the food boxes. The boxes are designed to feed a family not only for that day but also to provide food over several days. Each box contains a 12-pound turkey and prepared side dishes and desserts.
In order to fund Feeding the Needy, the Covington Rotary Club created the Covington Rotary Foundation, a non-profit 501(3)c foundation to accept donations from the community and area donors. These donations are used exclusively to assist needy families in the our area and are 100% tax deductible.
Feeding the Needy has zero administrative costs, as all of the work is done by volunteers from the Covintgon Rotary Club and people from the community. While we hope that one day demand for this project will disappear completely, in recent years, the demand has risen dramatically. Unfortunately, costs of food have also increased. If you or your company or organization would like to doante to Feeding the Needy, please send your donation to our address given on this page with a check made out to The Covington Rotary Foundation.
If you would like to volunteer your assistance, we welcome your help. This year, we will need assistance in the phone bank in the first 3 weeks of December to take phone calls and map the addresses to assist with delivery on Christmas Day. We also welcome help on December 23 and 24 in the food and box preparation, recycling of materials, and with further mapping of delivery addresses. On Christmas morning, we encourage community volunteers to deliver the food boxes. Please contact us as covrotary@gmail.com if you are available to volunteer.
