Help For Discouragement

By: Waylon Bailey ~

Are Americans more depressed than other nations?

One of the areas that we must constantly guard is our feelings, especially related to discouragement and depression. Some studies have shown that Americans seem to be more depressed than other peoples of the world. Isn’t it amazing, the people with the most in the world are most depressed?

How can we fight burnout, discouragement, and depression?

Fortunately, the word of God helps us in dealing with the discouragements of life.

First, do the practical things that will help you with discouragement. When the great prophet Elijah was discouraged, God told him to rest, eat, and drink.

When you’re depressed or discouraged make sure you get proper rest and that you eat well. Go to bed on a schedule and get up on a schedule, the earlier the better. Open the windows, turn on the lights, and get outside. The sun does have healing in its wings.

Cut down on caffeine and cut out alcohol. Remember, alcohol is a depressant; it’s not a pick me up.

Second, find good, godly, positive people to be around. Most people who are discouraged tend to keep away from people. You need to do exactly the opposite. Find people who love you and who care for you. Church would be the ideal place to look.

Part of Elijah’s problem was leaving everybody who might encourage him, including his faithful servant. He tried to fight his discouragement alone. We need people who will encourage us in the fight.

Finally and above all else, depend on God and his word. What finally brought Elijah out of his discouragement was God’s presence in the midst of his depression.

I encourage you to practice the presence of God. Acknowledge that God is right here with you, even if you don’t feel like it. Your feelings will deceive you. Emphasize the facts–God loves you and cares for you. He is with you.

Let Scripture minister to your heart.

I read – and pray to God – Philippians 4:4-9: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! . . . do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
