God’s Goal: Your Transformation

When I think of First Baptist Covington, Paul’s letter to the church at Thessalonica comes to mind. Paul had a difficult experience in Philippi as he attempted to share the gospel, but the people at Thessalonica were much more receptive.

In one of the earliest writings in the New Testament, Paul thanked them warmly for their love and devotion for Jesus and for him: “We always thank God for all of you and pray for you constantly. As we pray to our God and Father about you, we think of your faithful work, your loving deeds, and the enduring hope you have because of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-3, NLT).

Paul’s letters to the churches are practical words about belief and behavior. In fact, almost all of Paul’s letters are evenly divided between the two. He always begins with doctrine (belief) and closes with practice (behavior).

Beginning in August, I will begin a year long study of four of Paul’s letters: Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians. This will occur on Wednesday nights from 6:30-7:30.

My Wednesday night study is an in depth verse by verse study of the Scripture, focusing on doctrine, meaning, and application. The study is open to everyone. It crosses generations and denominations. We meet in the church Fellowship Hall.

At the present time, Dr. Jeff Griffin, professor at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary is leading the study in my absence. We will begin with Galatians August 14.

Wednesday nights are great opportunities for growth and study. I teach my Bible Study throughout the year. In addition, FBC provides short term studies as well. The complete line-up will be published soon.

Please join with us as we seek to be “conformed to the image” of the Lord Jesus Christ. Our goal for Wednesday nights is for your transformation. “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12: 2, NLT).
