How Should You Treat Non-Believers?

By: Waylon Bailey ~

Our lives are intertwined constantly with people who don’t know Christ and do not see Him as the Lord of their lives.

At the same time, we are told by Christ to go into all the world and make disciples.

How should we treat nonbelievers? How should we live so that we help them know Christ?

First, we must see them for who they are. Unbelievers are “not yet” followers of Christ. In the same way that we went from not knowing Christ to knowing Him, our friends and family members may move in the same direction. They are people who we want to help know the Lord Jesus Christ.

Every lost person deserves to know they are lost and how they can receive the mercy of God. We must see people as people for whom Christ died and people that He desires to know Him. Peter and Paul both told us that God desires that no one should perish but that all would come to the knowledge of the truth (2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4).

Second, we should look for every opportunity to tell the reason we have hope in Christ (1 Peter 3:15). The apostle Paul told us that we should take every opportunity to make Christ known.

Third, we must show the Gospel for what it is. The good news of Jesus saves us from eternal torment. It makes us new people in Christ. It makes bad people good and good people better. It produces love, joy, and peace within us.

Every person apart from Christ needs to understand what it is that Jesus gives us right now.

Finally, we should show the power and winsomeness of the Gospel. Changed lives demonstrate the gospel message more than anything else. You simply can’t argue with the power of a changed life.

Paul told us to always make our conversations filled with grace and seasoned with salt so that we would know how to answer everyone (Colossians 4:6).

It only makes sense. The gospel is the best news possible. It should be spoken of in that way.

Today, you’re going to get to interact with unbelievers. What are you going to do to help them know who Christ is?
