Our Need for a New Awakening

thegreatawakening“We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven. We have been preserved, this many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!”–Abraham Lincoln, proclaiming “a day of national humiliation, fasting and prayer,” April 30, 1863.

“The central message of the Bible is the mercy of God, and whoever comes to Him in penitence and sincerity will in no wise be cast out”–Herbert Lockyer.

“Revival is a people saturated with God”–Brian Edwards.

“Prayer is the most powerful resource we have in this life . . . . It unleashes the spiritual dynamite that obliterates darkness and despair”–Franklin Graham.

“A Great Awakening is the result of a prolonged, saturation of a community of believers with the Presence of God. His Presence does not come because the people deserve His grace, but because they are in need of His mercy”–Gary Miller.
