Lagniappe: Staff News

I have the responsibility of giving you the bittersweet news that Darlene Drivon, our longtime preschool minister, is retiring after a long and distinguished career at FBC Covington.

Darlene is one of the longest-term members of FBC. She started attending in 1984 and began volunteering in our children’s department. In 1994 she became a paid employee in the preschool area, which was obviously much smaller and less complicated than today. In 2004 we divided our children’s ministry. Instead of having one person in charge of children and preschool, we divided the responsibilities. Soon after, Darlene became our full-time preschool minister.

I am thankful for Darlene and Harold and their ministry with us. Darlene has been a consummate team player. I promise you that what she does is not easy. She just makes it look easy.

Darlene‘s retirement will take effect at the end of the month. We will have our next parent child dedication on February 25. That will also be the day that we recognize Darlene‘s ministry with us. We will honor her in the worship services and at noon we will move to the fellowship hall for a time for you to get to speak to her and thank her for her ministry.

Darlene alerted me of her retirement in January last year. We have been working to seamlessly fill this position. We expect to have an announcement at the appropriate time. In the meantime, Darlene has worked to put together a team that will continue to provide first class service for our preschoolers.

We are thankful for Darlene’s wonderful contribution to First Baptist Church. The Drivons plan to continue living in Covington and attending FBC, a decision that makes me very happy.
