That One Indispensable Thing

By: Waylon Bailey ~

We all have needs, and we need those needs to be met.

What is that one thing we can’t do without? What is that one thing that sustains life and keeps us going?

I was blessed with parents who wouldn’t give up and who practiced taking the worst of life and going on. What made them and many others people of an indomitable spirit?

In my case, it had to do with hope.

I was taught this indispensable need: we all need hope.

“As long as there is God, there is hope.”

The Christmas story is about hope. While some think of the story of Christmas as a sweet story that everyone should know, that is not the teaching of Christmas at all.

First of all, it’s not a sweet story. No one would think of tyrants who kill children sweet. No one would think of judgmental neighbors as sweet or benign.

Joseph and Mary did not have a story of sweetness; they had a story of obedience and trust. Theirs was a hard life because they were doing God’s will.

When we look at how the story ended, how God used this Son to bring hope and salvation to the world, then the story becomes “the sweetest that ever was told.” It is what God did through Christ that makes His name “Wonderful” and His story the “Good news.”

What God did in Christ gives us hope for today and hope for the future. It tells us that God is always with us, and He will never forsake us. It tells us that our sin can be forgiven and washed away. And, it tells us that we are not confined by the past. We can be new people in Christ.

Christ gives us hope–that one indispensable thing.

He is the once and for all sacrifice for our sin. He is the hope of the world.

“O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!”
