This is Your Inheritance

By: Waylon Bailey ~

Yesterday for my Easter Sunday sermon I did something different.

Instead of preaching from the Gospel accounts of the resurrection of Jesus or 1 Corinthians 15 which gives Paul’s account of the many resurrection appearances of Jesus, I preached from 1 Peter 1:3–9. This is a passage that speaks of our “living hope” which comes through the resurrection of Jesus Christ the Lord.

The apostle Peter spoke of the living hope we have in Christ. Because of Christ we have assurance and security for this present day and for the future.

What makes our hope secure?

First, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead gives us the assurance of our own resurrection. Paul discussed this fact and other New Testament writers proclaimed it as well.

Simon Peter spoke of God’s mercy which has given us a new birth and a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ the Lord.

Second, our future hope is based on who God is and what He has done for us. Peter says nothing about what we do but everything about what God does.

Third, we have a promised inheritance which is laid up for us in heaven.

Peter makes bold statements about this inheritance – it does not perish, spoil, or fade. It is not kept in a place vulnerable to storms or economic vicissitudes.

Instead, our salvation is kept (a military term) for us in heaven. It is God Himself who provides and God who protects. What can get more secure than that?

Finally, we are secure because of the coming salvation which will be revealed when Christ returns to the earth.

Then, we will see that which is yet unseen but which can never be taken away.

What an amazing promise and an amazing hope! “Praise be to the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ” for His unspeakable gift! (1 Peter 1:3).
