Who Am I In Christ?

Who am I in Christ?

Galatians 4:4–7 is one of the classic passages that answers the question, “Who am I in Christ?”

Paul tells us of God’s great work on our behalf.

God did four things for us.

First, God sent His Son at the perfect time in history. It was “in the fullness of time.” This, of course, refers to the birth of Jesus, one “born to woman, born under the law.” This refers to His humanity and to being part of the people of Israel.

Second, Christ redeemed us from our slavery to sin and the forces of this world. Christ paid the price for our sin so that we might be free in Him.

Third, God sent His Spirit to dwell within us. The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance in Christ. When the Spirit enters our lives, He prompts us to cry out “Abba, Father”.

Note the trinitarian formula in these verses. God the Father sent God the Son. Because we are sons, He also sent God the Spirit who prompts us to call out to the Father.

Fourth, God adopted us as sons and daughters.

What does this mean about who we are in Christ?

We are sons and daughters of the Father. This has occurred because of the Father’s plan to make us His own.

We are new in Christ, and the price for our sin has been paid. We have been ransomed from our slavery to our old way of life.

We are possessors of God’s Spirit. Therefore, we are not alone, and we receive the fruit of God’s Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self control” (Galatians 5:22).

We are heirs to the kingdom of God. We have an inheritance that is eternal in the heavens.

We are blessed beyond measure to be called the children of God and to share in his eternal kingdom.
