Would You Pray for America?

IMG_1423I want to ask you to spend this weekend and the coming days praying for America. Churches and Christians all across the country will be praying and asking God’s blessings upon our country this weekend.

The impetus for this serious call to prayer is the United States Supreme Court’s impending decision on same sex marriage.

Last year, the Supreme Court accepted a case that would legalize same-sex marriage across the country.

Since the Bible is abundantly clear that marriage is between a man and a woman, we certainly are called to pray for this decision by the highest court in the land.

I fear the Supreme Court will make the same kind of decision it made when it legalized abortion more than 40 years ago. Many Supreme Court watchers point out how the court imposed abortion in the land and created 40 years of turmoil. They seem very likely to repeat the same mistake..

When given the chance to vote the people have spoken loudly about their desire to continue the 4000 year old definition of marriage.

In my home state of Alabama, 81% of the people voted to reaffirm the biblical definition of marriage. This year a judge struck down the explicit desire of the people and imposed same-sex marriage.

Recently, advocates for redefining marriage talked about “the emerging global consensus” for same-sex marriage as if all the nations of the world are going to same-sex marriage. This is simply not true. Using the United Nations as its guide a group of professors has explained that 176 sovereign nations “retain the understanding of marriage as the union of a man and a woman.” Most of these are nations that protect gay and lesbian rights while holding to the traditional definition.

In America, a recent poll shows 61% of voters think that states should remain free to uphold marriage as between a man and a woman.

Would you join with many, many Christians across America this weekend and particularly this Sunday to join in prayer that America and our Supreme Court would make wise and godly decisions?
